Meet Gilby

Gilby and Jaime go way back…back to the Cardiac ICU at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in February 2007, both there as newborns. Of course, they’ve never actually met. Jaime’s Mom Mom works with Gilby’s mom, aunt, and grandmother, which is how we realized they were both there, feet away from each other, separated by the wall between their ‘pods’.

Two weeks before Christmas of 2012, 5 year old Gilby underwent heart surgery for an aneurysm of his right ventricle, which was complicated by a congenital heart defect known as Tetralogy of Fallot. A few days after surgery Gilby suffered a heart attack and has been fighting to survive, with the help of the highly skilled doctors at CHOP. Currently Gilby is on a combination of vasopressor and inotropic drugs designed to help stabilize his blood pressure and heart rate.

Since the operation Steve, Gilby’s dad, has not been able to commit to a normal work schedule as the owner of Great Egg Painting and Kathleen, his mom, has been forced to take an indefinite leave of absence from the Heist Insurance Agency in order to care for Gilby. Steve and Kathleen also have 2 other children at home, 13 year old Liam and 15 year old Erin.

On February 2, 2013, a fundraiser is being held at the Seaville Fire Hall to help with the expenses that have been accruing since Gilby’s hospitalization. Donations for the family are also being accepted online at Donations of items are also being accepted for the ‘Chinese Auction’ at the fundraiser. If you or anyone you know has something they would like to donate, please contact us and we will make arrangements to get the item(s) to the event organizers.

Gilby is a fighter and we just know he is going to pull through this with the love and support of not only his family, but the entire community. As his dad Steve says, “He’s got this!”
