My youngest son, who is 5 1/2 and has Cerebral Palsy, is in desperate need of an adaptive car seat. He has outgrown the car seat he has now, and it is large and cumbersome which makes it extremely difficult for me to get him into it. Some day I hope to be able to purchase a wheelchair van for him, but that day is a ways off considering my current financial and credit situation. But for the time being, while I am still able to carry him safely (though it won’t last much longer), I can put him in a car seat, as long as it is an appropriate one.
I actually got a business card in my mailbox today from a gentleman who has a home renovation business and is also a member of the local Knights of Columbus who will be building me a wheelchair ramp for the house we currently rent. It may not be for a couple of weeks, but through the generosity of this man and the K of C, it will be easier for me to get the Dude in and out of the house and the car. My landlord is already aware (in fact, they keep asking when it’s going to happen).
But back to the car seat…I was looking at the car seat that one of his PTs helped pick out and size him for on adaptivemall.com, and I came across a program they run called Kiddie Pool. They host a website for your child where they collect donations from people you ask, and when you receive enough donations, you get the item you requested. It’s such a great idea, so I went ahead and signed the Dude up for it.
